Description
Beautiful 19th century marble sculpture leaning on a large pillar with the word Sister at the base.
Background:
statue is the "Weeping Angel" or "Angel Of Grief"
Found in Metarie Cemetery, inside the mausoleum for Chapman Henry Hyams. This, like many other mausoleums was built to keep family remains safely out of the ground and secured so they would not float away during flooding or major weather events such as hurricanes. It is a beautiful and very imposing marble monument, that according to a basic google search was based on William Wetmore's story "angel of grief"
As people can't be trusted to behave nowadays, it is behind a large iron gate to attempt to keep it in pristine condition and out of reach of vandals and those who would attempt to use it as a place to sleep.
