Description
Along the Mississippi you will find Baton Rouge, and the USS Kidd (Designation DD-661) Fletcher Class Destroyer ship, which has been moored next to the Mississippi River since 1982. This is a memorial and there is also a museum nearby honoring those who served on the ship in World War II and the Vietnam war.
The Kidd was launched on 28 Feb 1943 in New Jersey at the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. This Fletcher Class Destroyer was named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed during the Attack on Pearl Harbor, dying on the bridge of his flagship the USS Arizona. Admiral Kidd was the first Naval officer to die during World War II.
During the lifetime of the ship, it earned 12 battle stars and operated during World War II and the Korean War.
